What happens to someone who can't hear the music in a City of Music? A city where Deaf means something is broken and needs to be fixed? Where the home of the great Johnny Cash has never heard of Beethoven's Nightmare? The Deaf children in the City of Music are screaming to be heard. The moral behind the Joe Paterno case has not yet been learned from that grim tale. This is not a gripe session, but an awakening to the abuse and neglect of thousands of Deaf American children. Americans who shop in our stores, sit in our classrooms, die in our hospitals, and waste away in our prisons. This is a call to arms. This is a story of too many Deaf children in America.Poppy O'Guin Steele Poppy O’Guin Steele, who grew up in the Deaf World, married her high school sweetheart who is now a police detective. They have two teenage daughters. Poppy taught developmental classes in community colleges while the girls were growing up. She was also a freelance interpreter and freelance writer during those years.Poppy is currently the founder and Executive Director of the Sign Club Co. which is a nonprofit that teaches sign language to hearing children in the community and advocates for deaf children. She loves Harry Potter, tiramisu lattes with soy, white-water rapids, and the color red.
