The book, part coming-of-age memoir, part adventure chronicle, finds Pinkney at the helm as he navigates his way through the five great capes to complete his goal of circling the globe by boat. At the time of his journey’s end, he was the fourth of five Americans and one of 128 individuals to have completed such a trip. He remains the first African-American to have done so.
